Are you thinking about planning your first skiing trip but are unsure of where to start? With so much to organise and so many ski resorts to choose from, it’s natural that any new skier would have a hard time planning a trip.

The good news is that because there are so many fantastic ski resorts to choose from, no matter where you go, you shouldn’t be disappointed. That being said, not all resorts are equal in terms of the experience that you will have. For an incredible first time skiing trip, Colorado should definitely be on your radar.

There are lots of resorts in Colorado, including the famous Vail resort. While Vail is a fantastic resort, the slopes tend to be more aimed towards experienced skiers. Breckenridge however, is a family-friendly ski resort, which means that many of its slopes are perfect for beginners.

For a fantastic first time experience, Breckenridge is definitely the perfect destination. To help you plan the most amazing skiing trip, we have put together a useful guide, below:

Be choosy about your accommodation — Ski resorts offer various types of accommodation. From fancy hotels to catered ski chalets, where you choose to stay is up to you. Don’t just opt for any old accommodation, think about your needs. As well as what you, and your travel group, want from the trip. It’s not just the slopes that make your trip; it’s also where you stay. If you’re not comfortable, you won’t have a nice time.

If there are young children in the group, staying in a hotel may not be the best idea. Renting a chalet could be a much better option as the kids will have more room to run about and play. Plus, should there be any fussy eaters in the group, you’ll have access to your own private kitchen. Most chalets also come with their own private hot tub – what’s more amazing than relaxing in a hot tub in the snow?  You could even treat yourself to a bottle of the bubbly stuff.

Decide how you’ll get there — For ease of travel, you’ll most probably choose to fly into Colorado and then take a cab or shuttle from the airport. Don’t make the mistake of not booking your transfers in advance – you’ll only end up waiting for hours. The last thing you want is to waste any of your trip stuck in the airport, so plan ahead.

The cheapest option is to take the Breckenridge airport shuttle. However, if you would rather not use public transport, you could always hire a car or book a cab. If you choose to drive, be wary of the dangerous driving conditions – the roads can be treacherous.

Book lessons — You might be an adult, but as a new skier, you’ll need to take a few lessons. Perfecting your skiing skills isn’t easy, it takes time and lots of coaching. If you want to make the most of your trip, book yourself in for at least three days of lessons, so that you become more confident on your skies.

The more confident you are on the slopes, the more you will enjoy your trip. Don’t rush yourself into trying out slopes that are too steep, to start off with stick to the nursery slopes. You might not be swooping down those massive black runs, but it doesn’t matter. What’s important is that you build your confidence and skiing skills and have a fantastic time.

When it comes to making your first time on the slopes amazing, there are a lot of things to consider. What’s most important, however, is that you stay in the right place and book yourself in for a few confidence-boosting lessons.
