There’s nothing quite like the hustle and bustle of a big city. Shops are open late, and there is no end to the number of bars and eateries. A vacation in the city is a great contrast to a beach holiday. The next time you’re planning a vacation to the city, make the most of it with these tips.

Research The Area    Find out as much as you can about the area before you travel. Buy some guide books, read travel blogs, and look for reviews. But remember, reviews can be good and bad. People have very different tastes and will experience a place in different ways.

Another good source of information is Pinterest. Search for the places you intend to visit and take a look at the inspiration boards.

Pack Carefully       Pack carefully, according to your vacation plans. Take essential items only and a few extras.

  • Take some comfortable shoes for walking around.
  • Pack according to the climate but allow for unexpected changes in weather.
  • Take a backpack or shoulder bag you can use during the trip. They could double as carry-on.
  • Take a guidebook and maps of the area. Don’t just rely on GPS.
  • Pack your camera and charger cables.
  • Don’t forget to take an adaptor.
  • Take chargers for all your tech.
  • Rather than packing a pile of books, opt for an e-reader to save space.

Ask       When you arrive, ask for advice and suggestions. Talk to the people at the hotel. Even better, talk to the locals. They can provide you with best insights. Immerse yourself fully in the culture and stop thinking like a tourist.

Tour guides are another source of invaluable information. Tours like the Hobart tours will take you to areas you’re not necessarily aware of. You will receive a unique insight into the area and its history.

Walk Around Or Take The Bus       Familiarize yourself with the city by walking around or jumping on the bus. And we’re not referring to tourist buses. Use the local bus routes. This will provide you with another perspective of the town. You will get to see residential areas, as well as the well-known landmarks. Bars and restaurants in these areas are likely to be more authentic. They will provide a different flavor than the usual tourist haunts.

Rest       There’s so much going on in the city that it’s tempting to cram in as much as possible. Depending on the length of your trip, try and take some time to relax. After all, it is a vacation. Go for a massage and wind down between trips. Catch up on your reading.

Independent Galleries       As well as taking in the big galleries and museums, look for smaller independent venues. They are likely to display work from local artists and makers that you may not see in the bigger institutions. The same is true of shopping. Look for smaller independent boutiques and handmade items.

Learn About The Local Events      Find out about events taking place during your visit. Look out for festivals, exhibitions, and markets. Free up some time to visit. If tickets are required, make sure you book early to avoid disappointment.

The trick to the perfect city vacation is a balance between planning and spontaneity. Organization is good, and it is necessary. But don’t stick to your plans rigidly. On some days have nothing planned and see where the day leads you.
