So many people love to go on holiday and see the world. But there is a big different between being a tourist anad being a traveler. A tourist is someone who visits a place and likes to stay in their comfort zone. They stick to what the guidebook says and stays in the typical tourist traps. A traveller on the other hand is someone who explores their new destination to the fullest. They immerse themselves totally in the local culture and language. As a traveller you open yourself up to a lot more of the world. You are able to appreciate other cultures and learn what it is like outside of your hometown. There are many ways to turn yourself from a tourist into a traveler.

Dress to fit in – It is easy to go to a new place and take your whole wardrobe with you. However, this might not be appropriate for your new destination. For instance, if you are visiting a hot country, you might be tempted to wear summer clothes. To many people this will be strappy tops and short dresses or shorts. Be mindful however, that this might not be what is accepted in the country you are visiting.

Ditch hotels – Staying in hotels is what your typical tourist will do. You get all the same comforts of being at home and you stay in the middle of all the typical tourist areas. Swap your hotel for a vacation rental instead. For instance, if you are visiting Tokyo and want to live amongst real Tokyo locals, you can enjoy a short term rental of someone’s house. You will immerse yourself in the culture by living as a Japanese person would, and also save a fortune. For more information, check here: https://www.roomorama.com/short-term-rentals/tokyo

Respect local cultures – It is easy to think when you are on holiday that you should do all the things you want. And why shouldn’t you? It is your holiday after all. That’s great to an extent, as long as you aren’t making anyone uncomfortable. For instance, in Australia, Ayer’s Rock is considered by the Aboriginals to be a sacred site. Some tourists choose to climb it despite the fact that this can be seen as disrespectful. You may also have heard about a group of tourists who took a nude photo on the peak of a Malaysian mountain. They were then arrested for allegedly angering the mountain spirits and causing an earthquake. If you familiarise yourself with the customs and beliefs of your holiday destination, you will have a much more enjoyable time.

Don’t stick to the guidebook – Travel guides are great for giving you a taste of what to expect and helping you know what the major attractions are. However, you can learn a lot more by talking directly to locals or other travellers. The locals will know their hometown like the back of their hand and be able to tell you unique things you won’t find in a guide book. Other travellers will be able to talk to you from experience and offer you hot tips too.
