Australia’s sunniest city, Perth has developed a distinct personality; with its glittering coastline, cosmopolitan bars and restaurants, and outdoor activities. As such an isolated city it can sometimes be overlooked by other Australian cities, but it is definitely worth a visit and time spent there will prove how beautiful it really is. There’s so much to see in this stunning destination, so here’s a basic guide for any visitors.

It has recently developed into a much hipper and trendier city, with new visitors and inhabitants moving in. With a rich history in mining and hard work, it has started to take on a more relaxed and leisurely vibe, giving it the perfect combination of work and play.

The best time to visit Perth is in the summer. There are loads of festivals on throughout December to February, the weather is at its best, and the locals are all enjoying their holidays. Autumn and Spring are also good times to visit, with the temperatures slightly cooler and wildlife in abundance. The beaches won’t be as busy and accommodation is generally cheaper.

Perth is home to 19 beautiful and unspoilt beaches, some of which are voted as Australia’s best. Cottlesloe beach is a firm favourite with visitors and locals, attracting swimmers, families, and boogie boarders. There are volleyball areas and lots of restaurants and cafes. City beach is 8 kilometres from the city centre and has been voted the city’s best, due to its safe waters and beautifully white sands.

If you want to get away from the beaches for a bit, Kings Park and Botanic Gardens overlooks Swan River and is the perfect place for an afternoon stroll or picnic. Larger than New York’s Central Park, it is filled with treetop walks, sculptured gardens, historical memorials and stunning views over the river and city. There are also a great range of museums and art galleries across the city, showing the city’s great history and culture.

If you’re looking for some retail therapy, Perth can certainly provide. With streets of high-end fashion and a variety of stores, there is something for everyone. Northbridge and Mount Lawley and great for more independant and quirky shops, while The Murray and Hay Street shopping centres are filled with bigger brands and labels.

Perth is also home to a variety of award-winning restaurants and famous chefs. With the food and cuisine scene expanding, more delicious cafes and bars are popping up all over the city. The rooftop bars and alfresco eateries are great in the summer and are in abundance all over the city. Later on, the pubs and cocktail bars Perth is famous for opens, staying open late and spilling into the streets during the warmer months.
