Today, we’re talking Rome, Italy’s capital city. When it comes to taking a trip to Italy, many of us opt to visit Milan or Venice, but Rome is just as beautiful and just as worth a visit. This city is packed full of architecture, influential art and culture. Think ancient ruins, Vatican City and galleries that are out of this world. Not to mention, some of the most amazing pasta and pizza restaurants, friendly locals and the most incredible markets.

To help you narrow down the best things to do while in Rome, as let’s face it there’s a lot to choose from, here are five must-do things.

  1. Take a tour of the city     The best way to get a taste for what Rome has to offer is by taking a tour of the city. There are many tours on offer, from walking tours to bus tours, the type that you go for is up to you. If you would like an experience that’s been tailored to your and your family, look at Touriocity Private Tours. If there are certain sights that you’re dying to see and others that you’re not bothered about, a personalised tour could be perfect.
  1. Visit the Colosseum       You might have seen it on your tour, but even so, you need to go back and re-visit the Colosseum. The largest amphitheatre in the world, the Colosseum is famous around the world. Tickets cost between £40 and £90 but are more than worth the cost. One of the world’s most incredible pieces of architecture, the Colosseum is definitely worth a visit. It can get incredibly busy, so it could be a good idea to book your tickets in advance online.
  1. Go to the Pantheon       A Roman temple dedicated to the gods of ancient Rome, the Pantheon is the most well-preserved building from that period. Created with various sections of arches, the architecture of the Pantheon is truly fascinating. When Michelangelo first saw this amazing building, he marvelled that it had to be the work or angels, not humans. So if you’ve got enough time, this should definitely be on your must-see list.

  1. Pompeii day trip      Okay, so this one might not technically be in Rome but while you’re there, it’s a must. If you’ve always wanted to learn more about the ancient city of Pompeii, while in Rome, you can. If you’re in good physical shape, you can spend a day hiking up Mount Vesuvius to explore the ruins of this frozen city.
  1. Find the best places to eat and drink       In Italy, each region has its own unique take on Italian food. This means that the food on offer in each place differs dramatically. While in Rome, one delicacy that you have to try is Pizza Bianco, a focaccia style pizza bread. If you’re a fan of fried foods, Rome is the city for you. From vegetables dipped in batter and deep fried to sweet treats, fried food is a favourite in Rome. Pasta, of course, is another dish that’s on every menu. If you’re stuck for which pasta to try, go for the carbonara, Rome is famous for it. Oh, and make sure to try Roman-style pizza, this is a super thin base topped with all sorts of delicious ingredients.

There you have it, five things you have to do while in Rome.
