Lapland is fast becoming one of the most popular resorts for holidaymakers. You have probably heard about this beautiful area before now, but how much do you know about it? Of course, this scenic place is rife with things to do and see. As you might imagine, though, the weather here is often below freezing. In the winter, the temperature can drop to -50°C. Despite this fact, there are many places of natural beauty that you may want to see here.

When should you travel?

If you have young children, you might find that the best time to go is during the winter and in the lead up to Christmas. After all, many kids find the idea of meeting Santa and his reindeer attractive. If you are traveling with friends or your partner, though, you should go during February when it’s still cold. You will find that there are fewer tourists at this point than there are at Christmas, which means that you can make the most of your time here.

How should you get there?

Let’s talk about how you’re going to get to this area. The easiest way to travel to Lapland is, of course, to fly. Some people have genuine issues when it comes to this method of transport. If the obstacles of flying are all too much for you, there are other options. For example, you might want to travel by train. You can find stations in either Sweden or Finland that might suit you. There are regular Lapland trains that should take you right to your destination of choice.

How can you get around the area?

Getting around Lapland might sound tricky, but it doesn’t have to be. There is a train service here, but it doesn’t run any further than Kemijärvi. If you have a vehicle, you might find that this is the best way to get around and see new places. There is also a bus system that you might want to use. While the buses are not regular, you can find a full listing page about them at your resort.

Cities of interest

While in this area, you want to learn as much about the culture of Lapland as possible. One way that you can do so is by traveling to a whole load of lovely cities in the area. A must-see place is Tornio, which is a tiny town just by the border of Sweden and Finland. As this is the oldest city in Lapland, there is a whole load of things you can experience here. Make sure that you visit the Orthodox Church of Tornio and the rapids in the river here. You should also head to Kemi and Kemijärvi – two places that make for wonderful days out.

Cuisines to try

Of course, whenever you travel, you should make an effort to try the local dishes. It should not surprise you to learn that reindeer dishes are quite popular in this part of the world. After all, the region is rife with these animals, which provide an excellent source of meat. If you don’t eat meat, you could always try some cloudberry – touted as the world’s most expensive berry. While you are in Lapland, visit some local eateries and see what they have to offer you.
